Eric - Sketches of Scheme from last class

Cody thesis blog

Please take sometime and look at the thesis blog, there are some interesting dialogues.

All

I did not see anything pinned up for the following individuals:
Robert and Joshua ; also
Eric, I am waiting for, and same for Jamie, they both spoke to me.

Everyone should take a look:
Lewis had an interesting physical model started.
Gregory, Nathan, and Giuseppe also had interesting new thoughts (schemes) with drawings and models.

Guseppie- I would think of the space "between" in the front as the way to get the public to the roof terrace and then to the community room. Its getting there!

Jesse- I would reconsider the lockers as the full "middle" bar and the gym on the other side, putting offices and community room above. Make the lockers rooms as a social space like the ancient bath house plans.

I would like to start next class by putting the models in a line and speaking about
Gregory or Lewis's structure.

L

L- see section

part of the design is the structure how it engages the planer "or walls" ---frame extends... develop section-
pull apart for terrace, see plan comments

Defining a Scheme

I just noticed that you responded to my earlier post that had the 13 different scheme ideas on it. The one closest to 'D' that you said was almost a scheme is similar to what i have the structure set as for my newest scheme. Here i have the 'D' scheme updated and then i took it a step further to show how the long span would interact with the solid volume on either side. I am working on the section but ultimately want to have the long span structure partially exposed or partially enclosed depending on what you're defining. I will be starting my 1/8" model tomorrow in the hopes that I can get some more feedback by then since i was not able to on tuesday.

New Scheme

I changed the overall idea from a shell that encloses the entire site to one that just encloses the pool. The idea is that the pool's shell will be exposed through carving away at the building. As the building is carved away the materiality changes as well. Also I have an idea that even the shell of the building is carved away so that the southern end of the pool is exposed to the air. The glass that goes right over the pool is like a garage door that can open and close.

Oubrerie - House in Kentucky - GA Houses 35

This can be a fun project

simplfy, plan and section

jamie, i had lunch with ion, oneof critics, and we spoke of your project and this is the result of the conversation. The section seems to dive into the idea of viewing. and the upper floor becomes more uniform form.

pin-up tomorrow

all pin up midterm board with response to critic and your new scheme; one over the other.
we will start with a group discussion on next seminar preparation

Plan refinement and long span idea sample

using Melissa's project as an example, this is an example of what the lines of the plan and the long span can develop into.... need to focus on the section... this simplifies many things including the form

Simplify, long span idea

Using Sal's project as an example:
forget the angle in plan; the idea is in your section with the
long span making the stepping spaces, you can see this in the elevation sk.
This can be one of your schemes, again the section tells a  story which can be built upon in terms of the idea of the long span.

the atrium making entry

Simplify with the idea of long span

meaning all projects need an idea of structure to become an expression of the quality of the space.

Using Robert's project as an example, long space can be the whole (truss which gfoes across the whole project) with the center "solid" of lockers and spa  spanning to hold the open gym etc.

Concept based project, focus on the structure as object..as discussed

greg. would like to see this as a scheme

Simplify

Hope you all worked hard over the break, following is an example of
forming the lines of the plan to have meaning.... with the program and the idea of whole
It uses Jesse's project as an example, option 1 is more whole because it relates to the pool and the idea of the outdoor space with the gym, making the lockers a mezzaine above gym

'Studio' Culture

OK, so after these two posts I feel the need to write something. When I was talking in class about the lack of studio culture and how everyone should bring something to the table when we get back, I didn't mean anything besides interaction between classmates. Kevin, I think you misunderstood what I said, though I cannot speak for Prof. Amoia in what she meant. Whether we hang out outside of class is irrelevant. In class, I'd like to discuss my ideas and get feedback from several classmates and I would be more than happy to listen to anyone's ideas and give them feedback as well. I don't agree with you that we're all in competition with each other. Some people may feel that way but I don't and I don't think I'm alone. Some of us are going to have similar ideas, which is fine. Grades aren't based on originality. Also, each other is two words, not 'eachother'. As far as studio culture goes I think that we could all care a little more about each others' projects and also try to interact in general more. The class seems a bit 'clicky' which is kinda normal, but I know I have always benefited from talking about my project with other students and this is the last design class where we can experiment before we have our thesis work. I think if everyone keeps the classroom a little more organized and get a little more enthusiastic about our work things will be much better.

Studio Culture

Hey Guys,

I would like to get your impression on this. Like, I have been talking to Rob and we both have different and similar opinions on what our studio culture should be like. To some degree, this is the real world and we are all one day going to be at competition with eachother which seems to make us all seem abit distant with eachother. However, we are all also trying to help eachother out and get eachother's opinions. Its a double duo. As far as hanging out afterwords and everyone being all lovey dovey, I dont know about how you guys feel but again, this is just my thoughts on it: I think in concept its a great idea, but it just doesnt seem to work out so well. Like, everyone seems to have jobs, or other obligations not to mention we all live so far from eachother. Thats just some of my own feelings on the subject... If I am being a complete idiot or you agree, just post your feelings on the subject.

Translation to Tranformation:

This project from my understanding has nothing to do necessarily with the program. It deals with the interlocking of these programs. The “Locker Rooms” are not critical as a programmatic element but rather a transfer from the dry atmosphere to a more relaxation area that being “Spas” or the “pool.” Much like the wet areas, this program and movement should be looked at much like a liquid. The fluidity between one zone to connect you to the next. It is this that will and should drive the project into making spaces and sculpting your project. Some of the best schemes within our class have dealt with this “1/3” issue of dealing with the site. Now looking at EVERY project, there is always and must be 3 parts to this project. Whether it is a 3 separate zone or a 2 separate zone – Both have 3 zones. In a 2 scheme zone (wet Vs. Dry), there is still the connection between the two in order to merge and unite people. Debating upon how this is done, will fuel and create not only the plan but the section as well. Only through section and plan can we underline the issues and deal with them accordingly. Both should represent all of the following 3 zones outlined and how the exterior forces (that being sustainability, site, context, circulation and neighboring buildings) start to truly sculpt our project to make our building to a successful project.

Scheme

So I'm still working on what my scheme should look like. As some of you know, I'm trying to get the pool area to be the focal point and have the outdoor space and building space frame it somewhat. Feel free to offer anything...
